与众一样普通的生命;

空中滚滚黑烟;

Remember

Gone are the breaths of the men who fought
To free us from the pain they’ve known.
Our liberty their blood has bought,
Bearing the torment as hefty stone.

Silent in their graves asleep,
Many with their stories untold.
And loved ones sorrowfully weep,
Thousands of memories unfold.

Row and rows of fallen warriors,
Ordinary souls much like all;
But markedly more superior.
The doleful scenes shall we recall:

The sky was a dark cauldron-black,
And the field lay thick in hostile air.
The wind howled each way forth and back.
A thick fog threw them in despair.

Though in harsh climates, war raged on.
The deluges, the tempestuous storms,
The arid weather, the blazing sun,
And the frostbitten hands deformed.

Though knowing that death lies ahead,
They clenched their teeth and charged onwards:
Creeping across corpses which still bled,
Gelid hands gripping tight on sword.

However, they were surrounded.
Everywhere in all directions
Bullets and arrows bombarded.
Slaughtered like sheep, gone their complexion.

While grenades and bombs exploded,
The air had become tenebrous;
Then up a red mist of blood spewed
Where thousands laid deadly helpless.

They have bore the weight of anguish,
For it was a substantial burden.
This act of valour unselfish
That few would do for certain.

These men and women far too adorn
To be remembered in just one day.
And so, we see a poppy worn
But surely not enough to repay.

But let us also remember
Redemption’s hill where Jesus died.
Where His body was dismembered
And whom many have denied.

Because of His eternal love,
The Word became flesh and bore sin.
The perfect Lamb came down from above.
His precious blood and scars to win.

Who endured the sins of all the earth
For there was no greater weight borne.
And nothing could have paid its worth
For my Saviour was left forlorn.

My chains are gone, my debt is paid
So that I need not bear the rugged cross.
My ticket to heaven is gained
So we need not endure hell’s chaos.

So shall we forever keep in heart:
The eleventh of November,
And our Saviour’s victorious scars.
Forever echoing: “Remember!”

Written by Elizabeth when she was in Grade 8 (14 years old).
She presented the poem on the Remembrance Day 2018 at RHCA school chapel.

Elizabeth:  A high school student in grade 11 in Ontario, Canada.  I really enjoy the excitement of traveling and playing basketball, golfing, and snowboarding.  I love the visual arts, drama, and music. I take my mind outside of what is simply restricted in this world. There is none other than poetry that can capture all of me and truly let go of my thoughts and paint them through words.
