As they were leaving the garden
one of the angels bent down to them and whispered

I am to give you this
as you are leaving the garden

I do not know what it is
or what it is for
what you will do with it

you will not be able to keep it
but you will not be able

to keep anything
yet they both reached at once

for the present
and when their hands met

they laughed

他们离开花园时
一个天使俯身对他们耳语

我送给你们这件礼物
在你们离开花园时

我不知道它是什么
也不知道为什么要送
也不知道你们会用它做什么

你们无法保存它
你们也

保存不了任何东西
但它们已抵达

就在此刻
他们的手触碰到彼此

他们笑了

—— 这句我是这么理解的：
the present，与标题一致，依然翻译成礼物，把时态也考虑进去

那么：

然而当他们都伸出手去

接受礼物时
触碰到了对方的手

他们都笑起来

我觉得这里“present”有双重意思，既是礼物，也有"this moment, 此刻"的意思。这一刻稍纵即逝，无法保存。

In the second stanza,
"I am to give you this
as you are leaving the garden" 觉得这里的 "as" 是指理由。也就是说，天使看到这俩人正离开花园，决定给他俩一份礼物。提醒她俩珍惜此刻，珍惜生命？

In the third sanza, "or what it is for", I think here "it" refers to "The Present".
中文意思就是，不知道它的用途。

they laughed

Here "at once" 有马上，立刻的意思。

他俩还是立刻伸手

去接礼物
当他们的手相遇

他们笑了
