穿越黑暗的旅行

黑暗中行进时我看到一头鹿
死在威尔逊河边的路沿。
翻动并推入峡谷通常是最好的做法：
那路狭窄；转弯也许会造成更多死亡。

借助尾灯的光亮我摸索到车子后面
站在那堆肉边，一头母鹿，刚被杀戮；
她已僵硬，几乎冰冷。
我想拉开她；她的肚子大大的。

我用手指摸了摸就摸到了原因——
她的肚子暖和；她的小鹿呆在里边等待，
活着，平静，将永不诞生。
在那山道边我犹豫了。

汽车压低着泊车灯照着前方；
引擎盖下传出引擎平稳的噜噜声。
我站在温暖的尾气中尴尬踌躇；
我可听见我们这群人周围荒野的倾听。

我为我们所有人千思万想——我唯一的急转弯——，
然后推她翻过路沿落入河水中。


Traveling Through The Dark

Traveling through the dark I found a deer
dead on the edge of the Wilson River road.
It is usually best to roll them into the canyon:
that road is narrow; to swerve might make more dead.

By glow of the tail-light I stumbled back of the car
and stood by the heap, a doe, a recent killing;
she had stiffened already, almost cold.
I dragged her off; she was large in the belly.

My fingers touching her side brought me the reason--
her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting,
alive, still, never to be born.
Beside that mountain road I hesitated.

The car aimed ahead its lowered parking lights;
under the hood purred the steady engine.
I stood in the glare of the warm exhaust turning red;
around our group I could hear the wilderness listen.

I thought hard for us all--my only swerving--,
then pushed her over the edge into the river.

The Light By The Barn

The light by the barn that shines all night
pales at dawn when a little breeze comes.

A little breeze comes breathing the fields
from their sleep and waking the slow windmill.

The slow windmill sings the long day
about anguish and loss to the chickens at work.

The little breeze follows the slow windmill
and the chickens at work till the sun goes down--

Then the light by the barn again.

威廉·斯塔福德(William Edgar Stafford, 1914-1993)，美国诗人、和平主义者。早年当过甜菜种植工、电工学徒、炼油工和建筑工，之后在堪萨斯大学和艾奥瓦大学学习，并获得博士学位，二十世纪四十年代末，他开始在俄勒岗州波特兰市的一所大学任教，后来还在亚洲多个国家讲学。（百度）
48岁时出版第一部重要诗集《穿越黑暗》，它在1963年获得了“美国国家图书奖”。接着他陆续出版了超过65卷的诗歌和散文。获得的众多荣誉和奖项包括“雪莱纪念奖”、“古根海姆奖”和“西部各州诗歌终身成就奖”。1970年，他担任美国国会图书馆的诗歌顾问（这个职位目前被称为桂冠诗人）。斯塔福德的诗往往显得很简朴。然而，就像罗伯特·弗罗斯特的作品一样，经过更仔细的观察，它们揭示了一种独特而复杂的视角。他最著名的著作包括《获救之年》（1966）、《真实的故事：新诗和诗集》（1977）、《澳大利亚的爬行：作者职业观点》（1978）和《俄勒冈消息》（1987）。

威廉·斯塔福德的这两首，我倾向于把它们归向自然主义文学，当然，不一定准确~

我也这么认为。其实这首我觉得也是穿越“内心的黑暗”的旅行。
